Mr. Gates may have been verbally abusive (entirely appropriate when one's home has been invaded), but he in no way threatened Sgt. Crowley. WHY did Crowley refuse to identify himself as Mr. Gates requested? WHY did Crowley arrest Mr. Gates when no genuine threat was present? Crowley as a saint in this debacle.
At some point, he knew he was dealing with the actual homeowner, and decided to place him under arrest anyway, for being "disorderly" on his own property. If anyone thinks this is ok, let me know how you feel when this happens to YOU, or someone in your family.
I expect the citizens to act the way they usually do. They aren't trained, experienced law enforcement officers. This Sgt. is allegedly an instructor as well.
In the end, I think the Sgt. lost it, and moved into "I'll show you" mode, and that's shameful to all of us (or at least it should be, especially with him being a SUPERVISOR). Rank and file expect a lot of us, as do upper mgt. of our respective agencies; if we can so easily fall into these traps while performing our duties, what kind of example are we setting for the troops?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35159315.post-62970395976055192912009-07-24T14:48:58.382-05:002009-07-24T14:48:58.382-05:00"its their time" NOT!!!"its their time" NOT!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35159315.post-960730642882254712009-07-24T13:48:40.027-05:002009-07-24T13:48:40.027-05:00It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies...It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies, predators, and parasites. It is unfortunate ...Speaking of those who prejudge:
It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies, predators, and parasites.
Gates' home was not invaded. Sgt Crowley responded to a call of a break in (burglary in progress)and was met by the caller who gave him further info.
Sgt. Crowley identified himself to Gates on two separate occasions. Sgt. Crowley asked Gates for ID to show that he was indeed the resident.
Satisfied that Gates was indeed the resident Sgt. Crowley attempted to leave but was followed by Gates who continued to berate the Sgt. While outside the residence Sgt. Crowley warned Gates twice that he was being disorderly (a misdemeanor crime).
Gates continued to "act a fool" and was placed under arrest. He was not arrested because he was a threat.
So hope all you want, Sgt. Crowley will not be fired for acting appropriately. Keep in mind there were several witnesses on hand including the original caller.
Too bad the Harvard scholar had to act like an uneducated ghetto fool.SECOND CITY SARGEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00599356905057528439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35159315.post-32979911254396853232009-07-24T08:39:46.005-05:002009-07-24T08:39:46.005-05:00It's nice to have balls. It's nice to have balls.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35159315.post-54415483717959752542009-07-24T08:18:13.069-05:002009-07-24T08:18:13.069-05:00It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies...It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies, predators, and parasites.
