Great news from baseball-loving Iowa:

Chicago Police Officer Michael Mette, wrongly convicted and railroaded into five years in prison for the crime of self defense, will be getting out of prison soon.

The Iowa Court of Appeals, in its ruling posted early Wednesday, reversed Mette's conviction and ordered sentencing Judge Monica Ackley to acquit him.

The appeals panel said the court had no business discounting the self-defense argument. Mike threw just one punch in self defense after he'd been repeatedly attacked by an angry drunk with a blood-alcohol content of 0.27 percent.

He's out of jail there, but J-fed will charge him federally when he comes back to Chicago.

Are you an idiot?

Remember, usually in court most think cops are liars. Police are guilty until proven innocent now in Chicago.

To be charged with a section 1983civil rts viol, the officer has to be acting under color of law. Mette was off-duty, out of state and acting as a private citizen, without the power and force of the CPD behind him.
I can't stand J-Fed and do not trust him one bit. But in regards to the Mette case, your comment is completely off base.

I was never a huge Charles Ramsey fan, while he was on the CPD. But, I must give him utmost respect, for the eulogy he delivered, on behalf of Philadelphia Sergeant Patrick McDonald. Commissioner Ramsey hit a grand slam with his eulogy and this should be watched by all LEO's.

R.I.P. Sergeant Patrick McDonald and Officer Nathaniel Taylor, two heroes.

He's not home yet SCS. And try updating more than once a week. Pardon that last comment. I shouldn't expect a white shirt to do work. Silly me.

They should prohibit Police officer from drinking at all times. After all are they not cops 24/7? If they don't want that how about treat them as security guards. No gun off-duty. You know, no gun equals no balls.

The public stopped trusting us a number of years ago. I recognized it at the first Michael Ceriale
trial; it ended up as a mistrial. One of the jurors was biased against the police and didn't tell the judge during jury selection. The juror voted "not guilty" while the remaining eleven voted "Guilty". The juror said the police put dope on him ealier in life.
If I have a prisoner in a hospital who is in my custody, I know any confession I get from him while he's under treatment, is going to get challenged; the lawyer will argue: (1). His client didn't know what he was saying because he was injured.
(2). The police coerced his client in the hospital.
(3). The police threatened to "pull the plug" to get the confession.
(4). The police made up the confession.
I use a unique strategy, in particular with personal injury traffic crash where the hospital didn't perform a alcohol/drug test and I couldn't detect an odor of alcoholic beverage or detect drug impairment, was to be very cordial to the driver in the hospital. Once establishing trust with the driver, I'd lie and tell him I smelled alcohol on his breath (even though I didn't) and see if I'd get a response If I get the guy on the verge of confessing, then I'd do the unexpected: I'd tell him to exercise his Miranda Rights.
Why do that? Because he's in a hospital and he's most likely scrared to death and here's this nice police officer acting as a friend is helping him! The result is this: The driver will fess up his drug use, drinking, inhaling, etc., and he won't shut up! When that happens, grab the nurse or doctor to be a witness. Nothing beats having your traffic violator confess in front of a CIVILIAN and not shut up! Even though the doctor or nurse may blow off court to testify, it protects me against bullshit CR#s of beating, torturing etc.,during an IPRA investigation, civil lawsuit etc..
It's unfortunate the public distrusts us. This problem willl grow during the economic crisis that just started. It's crummy I have to utilize such caution to get a confession to protect myself because this department won't. If someone saw my tactics on television, at first they'd think the strategy is lunacy, but there's a lighter side to it that a few of you sergeants who used to be detectives can relate to: By being polite and cordial, how many times did you get a guy to fess up a crime and he wouldn't shut up!?!? Even in front of his public defender! When a traffic violator confesses his alcohol/drug use in front of the medical people, they'll also plug him with a needle and get you the ever important blood alcohol content for your case.
