By a 92 percent vote, Chicago Police sergeants are refusing to swallow a new five-year contract that could have freezed their pay through 2012 and mandated physical fitness requirement tied to new promotions.Sun Times
John Pallohusky, president of the Chicago Police Sergeants Association, said the vote counted today was 926-to-84 after the Daley administration attempted to play hardball.
In exchange for allowing sergeants to retire at age 55 with premium health benefits, the city demanded that sergeants agree to a pay freeze that would only thaw if an independent arbitrator awarded a pay raise to the Fraternal Order of Police.
Most captains and approximately half the lieutenants would be eligible to retire at 55 during the next three years. I would have to believe that was the driving motivation behind their vote to accept the cities ultimatum. Sergeants on the other hand had a couple hundred eligible and only 84 voted to accept. I think we are no worse off by rejecting this offer.

Boy that wasn't such a bright decision. In tough economic times we are being like the auto unions when Detroit was going through there economic problems. Now the auto workers are on a downward fall that aint gonna stop. I voted for the cities proposal. What's wrong with supervisors getting in shape and being a good example for the troops. Pay freeze, come on folks we are lucky we have the great jobs that we have. You gotta admit the pay and present benefits ain't so bad when you look at the options out there.Lots of folks are suffering unemployment. Man its too bad we can't see the forest because of the trees. I don't want to sound like a company man but right is right and wrong is wrong.

sgt with 25plus yrs in, I am stunned that the huge payout benefit, that would far beat out a very tiny cash raise, was rejected by the majority...oh wait what the fuck was i thinking, if only the physically fit sgts could be promoted to Lt then probably only 85 to 100 could be eligible. So young fatty sgts I pray the arbitrator goes with the fitness standard and I will not be retired, but I will be laughing my ass off and taking the next Lt. exam! So young fools you win this battle, but I bet you have just lost so much more. Good to have senority and enjoy the circus. Old school but not brain dead and I still got what it takes to get over a 6ft wall and take an offender down without help from deadbeats
A huge payout? For who? 200 sergeants in the next 3 years? Then what?
The offer from the city had not one guarantee in it.
This has nothing to do with anyone having a fat ass. It has everything to do with a city that has never negotiated in good faith. I would rather negotiate and get nothing then to lay down so a handful of people would receive a "huge financial benefit". And since when has the city ever offered a huge financial benefit to anyone that works for a living? Don't blame the younger sergeants, this is a classic divide and conquer technique used by the city. The city could have had an understanding with CPSA just as they did with FOP. Why didn't they?

I have to wonder at that. Makes me wonder if you were ever out there doing it in the first place. I myself have 20 years on and have the aches, pains and scars from running and gunning as I am sure a lot of other senior sergeants do. And thanks to the wonderful IOD doctors we have to deal with that push us through to get us back on the street as soon as they can instead of giving us the best possible treatment we deserve, there are a lot of members that would be screwed by the physical standards. The department wanted us out there doing our best and through the years I gave it to them. Unfortunately the city didn't do their best to provide for our well being.....

We still have nothing. No contract, no leadership, no scores, just a bunch of assholes sitting around drinking cheap beer and spending our hard earned union dollars.

Actually, when there's no field lieutenant, the watch commander should get the extra pay. It's the watch commander that does the extra work.
