JAMMING

I spotted this article at the Washington Post via Pajamas Media.Com. The article is about the use of equipment by federal agencies to jam wireless devices and the desire to allow local law enforcement the same abilities.
It is an increasingly common technology, with federal agencies expanding its use as state and local agencies are pushing for permission to do the same. Police and others say it could stop terrorists from coordinating during an attack, prevent suspects from erasing evidence on wireless devices, simplify arrests and keep inmates from using contraband phones.

But jamming remains strictly illegal for state and local agencies. Federal officials barely acknowledge that they use it inside the United States, and the few federal agencies that can jam signals usually must seek a legal waiver first.

The critics would rather that law enforcement find non disruptive techniques to obtain the desired results rather than disrupt Joe Citizens phone call.
"When lives are at stake, law enforcement needs to find ways to disrupt cellphones and other communications in a pinpointed way against terrorists who are using them," New York City Police Commissioner Raymond F. Kelly told a Senate panel Jan. 8. He also cited the Mumbai terrorist attacks, when hostage-takers used media spotters and satellite and mobile phones to help them outmaneuver police at hotels, train stations and other targets.

Occasionally suicide bombers have second thoughts and decide that they aren't really ready for "martyrdom,” unfortunately, a handler will step in and activate the explosives wirelessly.

I really don't see to many applications for this technology on the CPD. In the advent of a terrorist incident the Feds will be present on scene.

In this economic downturn, I believe the best investment is in hiring more officers. Spending money on technology that is not viable is wasteful.

Technology is great but it will never replace well trained, dedicated personnel.

They do sell devices which can jam cellphones in a 30 ft. radius of the device. And it fits in your coat pocket. It does wonders at resturants and movie theaters.

We can't get tasers for everyone and you want electronic disruption devices? What the fuck would 99% of the department do with that? And if only one percent can use it, how effective would it really be? Raises, cars, personnel (aka, Daley's "death"). That's what Chicago law enforcement needs. Pull your head out of your ass. Schmuck.

Okay take a deep breath...There is not one word in that post where I state that every member of the Chicago Police Department should have this device. However, I believe that in the near future local law enforcement, throughout the country, will have a need to create counter terrorism units and that this would be one of the tools needed in their arsenal.

Off Topic:

Speaking of forked tongues, didn't Da Mayor state that taxpayers would have to pay for vandalism to Churches yesterday?

A major Chicago cultural icon, Holy Name Cathedral, suffered extensive fire and water damage today from a three alarm fire. The Cathedral just finished an extensive multi-million dollar rehab and recently reopened to the public.

Didn't former Governor Rod Blagojevich and the State of Illinois end up giving Pilgrim Baptist Church one million tax dollars to rebuild from their fire?

Pilgrim Baptist Church Gets $1 Million From State

Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago has finally received the $1 million promised it by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to help rebuild the fire-damaged structure next to the destroyed sanctuary.

The Blagojevich administration, in what it claims was "a bureaucratic mistake," originally gave $1 million to a school that had been a tenant of Pilgrim Baptist Church before the landmark structure was gutted by a 2006 fire.

Financial reports show Loop Lab School had $243 in cash and a $32,000 debt at the start of 2006, just six days before it lost the space it was renting when fire destroyed the building.

As a Chicago taxpayer and a resident of Illinois I hereby demand that the same monies and assistance be rendered to the rebuilding of Holy Name Cathedral. You travel a very slippery slope when you play the Socialist race game.

I think this may become a very significant issue in the near future.

I know every politician worth their salt reads this blog, pay heed, the voters are also alert!

Yeah, sure, ok. How about lasers and nets that shoot out of the side of the car while you're at it. Get a hold of yourself. Putz.

You truly are an idiot.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
