12 HOUR DAYS

In LA the 12 hour day, as I have been told, is based on fixed days off. There are two day off groups, Mon-Tue-Wed and Thur-Fri-Sat. You bid for a day off group. For example, officer A is low on seniority and his days off are Mon-Tue and Wed and every other Sunday. Officer B is higher in seniority and his days off are Thur-Fri-Sat and the alternate Sunday.
For me three straight 12 hour days is a bit much, add a fourth every other week and its beyond acceptable. Add to it that less senior officers may not see a weekend for years. No thanks!
I am not sure what Mr. Weis' 12 hour schedule looks like so I can't comment but I would love to put forward one that might gain some support.
A 12 hour day is long but under this plan you only work two days and then off two days. Our friends in the firehouse "work" 24 hours then off two days. Every 5th time they do this (correct me if I'm wrong) they get a "Daley Day", which gives them 5 consecutive days off. I believe this is to keep them within the 2080 hours a year. Under the two on, two off plan you would work 24 hours, not consecutively, and then be off two days. In a 4 week period you will work two 48 hour weeks and two 36 hour weeks. This means that after the 4 week period you would be owed 8 hours time and after three periods you would be owed 24 hours. This necessitates the need for a "Daley Days" for policemen. Firemen receive them on a rotating basis and this could be figured into our schedule with a minimal effect on manpower.
The bottom line to this plan is you work 2080 hours a year, work two days, off two days, and once during a three period span you are off for 6 days.
Food for thought.

12 hour days means I get to be a j.o. to my subordinates 4 hours more each day.

I previously worked 12 hours for another department. The schedule worked like this...2 days on, 2 days off. 3 days on 2 days off. 2 days on, 3 days off. Every other Fri. Sat. Sun. you had off. One day out of a two week period was an 8 hour shift instead of 12. Therefore you only work 80 hours in a two week period. That day is bid on by seniority. The shifts are 6a-6p, 7a-7p, 3p-3a, and 7p-7a. I loved that schedule. You had 15 days off per month. Those that fear they wouldn't see their families would actually probably see them more, especially if you currently work any afternoon shift. I would go back to that schedule in a heartbeat.

My commander wants all the sgts to add lunches to their old logs from months ago. Isn't that a Rule 14 violation if we make up lunches after the fact?

why not 4 ten hours days then 4 days off? it gives us 2080 hours and a lot of days off.

I'm also an advocate of the 10 hour day. Almost anything that gives me more time with my family and the elimination of the 6th work day is a good thing. However, the 10 hour day is 5 on 3 off for 4 weeks and 4 on 4 off for 3 weeks. It is not just 4 on and 4 off as you stated.

Why do we knock things when they are senority based?

If we went (HUGE IF, not gonna happen, but for the sake of argument) to 12 hour days, why not base the shifts, and day off groups on senority district wide??

At some point, time of service should count for something if you do not have a phone call - even if you are a dog.

Part of the reason this job is going to hell is b/c the new kids, all college educated (and that IS good) are to quick to think they are OWED something. That, and a lot of them have phone calls.

You have to respect and learn from those who came before you, dogs, workers, clout, etc...if they have time, they have earned it.

Is this fair......no, I know that, but it is what is right. In time, the young worker will become either an old time dog, or hopefully, and old time worker and then will have his/her time to pick.

Nobody mentions the field day that the lawyers will have when we, the police, are involved in a serious incident in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th hour of our tour of duty, especially on your Friday. Could be interesting.

As oppose to the field day they have when a serious incident occurs on our 6th consecutive work day?

seniority based? please don't make me laugh. The union and department both know how to get around issues that we all know should be based on seniority. It's all based on one's clout pure and simple, call it what it is.

Do you honestly think that Jody the Jag gives two craps about what affects us. He cares about his salary, his ego, and the trappings of power. We are nothing but the proverbial grease for his tanks as he runs over us.

Have you lost your mind?!

Didn't at least one of the hijackers spend time in Germany before plotting 911? Like there are no terrorist cells in Germany that could intercept the package on the other end before it got to your friend. Who knows who your friend has ties to-as if there are no bad cops in Germany-retired or otherwise?

You're lucky the Feds didn't come after you.

I agree with you on time in service should count for some things...and it does. Watch bids, furlough picks, details, pay etc. but how can you say a dog or clout officer earned anything? Time in service shouldn't benefit these people when it comes to making a fair and better schedule for everyone! I agree with respecting and learning from some older officers, but you have to agree just because someone may be an older officer it doesn't always make them a good officer. A young officer can't learn or respect an older officer if he doesn't know anything or is a piece of shit and always has been. You also say you know that it wouldn't be fair to the young officer, but that in time, the young worker will become an older officer and have his time to pick. This is easy to say if you are an officer with some time on....but for the young officer... his family suffers and morale goes down the toilet. This is no way to treat our fellow officers even if they are the young ones. I'm sorry but your comments are just asinine!!

We should have 40 hour days and 6 days off. Highest in seniority gets Saturday and so on. The 40 hour day would include the following:

1) 5 half hour lunches with 15 minute travel times on each side.

2) 10 personals

3) 2 1/2 hours of foot patrol

4) 10hr union sleep in station lot

5) 5 hours in the workout room

6) 1 hour beat meeting

7) 5 CTA checks 15 min each (Homeland security check
half hour for 1st and 18th Dist.

To the above poster: You Sir are brilliant! Now that's what I'm talking about.

Good morning,
You may have read my post on the 12th. I am the founding father of the 40 hour day. I am not a sarg but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
To the gentleman that is nervous about lawyers having a field day with the poooooooooooooolice on the last 4 hour of the twelve hour day; I see your point. In the 40 hour work day, the last four hours are all golden hours (you no do nada/blinders..) Besides, it's your first day back and your last day before R.D.O.
Thank you for your white shirt time,
Mr. Check Mate

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
