Eliminate 6th Work Day

Just a thought about eliminating the 6th consecutive work day.
Some time ago I had a conversation with an officer of the NYPD and asked him about their work schedule. To my surprise he stated that they worked 5 on 2 off then worked 5 on and 3 off. In this way you rotate days off but you fall far short of the 2080 hours that the city requires. (40 hours per week x 52 weeks = 2080 hours) With this type of schedule you would work roughly 1950 hours a year. I know somebody who mentioned this to a high official of FOP and he stated that the city's stance is that our salary is based on 2080 hours and that if we wanted that schedule we would have to prorate our salaries.
For example, let us take an officer under the current contract at step level 7 (over 10 years)
The officers yearly salary is $70,656.00 which is $33.97 per hour. We take the hourly salary and multiple by the new amount of worked hours. 33.97 x 1950 = $66,240.00 for a difference of -$4,416.00.

I am by no means advocating this schedule but only making you aware that it is an alternative.

Food for thought....My nest post will deal with a 12 hour schedule that is an alternate to what you have been hearing.

why can't we work 4 on 2 off and rotate backwards.

Sign me up, I'll take the cut if that fucking sixth day was finally eliminated.
Hey sarge any guess on a det. class and the size?

4 on and 2 off makes the 2080 and there is no problem. People need to get the 3 day weekend out of their minds because that is the flaw in most of the proposed schedules. The only reason the city would not go for 4 and 2 is only three day off groups would be needed A, B, and C, Three day off groups would simplify things too much and the building would never go for actually simplifing things. No cut in pay, no muss, no fuss.

Take a look at the 10 hr, you'll find it probably the most effective and the most likely for us to get.

I will work 1950 and the 130 hours will be for working out on my personal time. Does that solve the problem?

To the advocate of the 4 on 2 off.
I am certinly not against it but I see a flaw in your presentation.

1/3 of the watch would be off every day whether you assign it as day off groups ABC or 1-6.
Your flaw is in the hours worked in a year. Depending on your day off group you would work between 1936 hrs. to 1952 hours. It takes 6 weeks to cycle through the days off on 4 of those weeks you have worked 40 hours, i.e. work sun-wed off thur & fri then work sat 5 days that week equals 40 hours. Two weeks during this cycle has you work 32 hours, i.e. off sun & mon, work tue-fri and off sat this has you work 4 days 32 hours for that week. The 32 hour week happens 16-18 times during the year.

Actually I like the idea of 1 on 6 off. Would give us plenty of time to get in shape etc.

Could you make up the time by working out for one hour a day, 3 days a week at the end of your tour?

3 (hours a week) x 52 (weeks) = 156 hours to make up the loss...

You would be required to swipe in / log in, whatever, and then do something but in the end the benefit is to you, and you get the better working hours too.

Just a thought - not sure if it makes sense.

Please let me know what you think, if it makes sense, etc.

Well SRG. what do you propose? That 6 day work week is nuts...thats at least one day too many looking at this citys guts. No reason for it. Those old timers that are used to it need to be fair to the new guys who have another 20 or so years on. Most people I've meet who whine about any change are guys who are used to this shit schedule and are about to retire anyway. EVERYONE else is dying for a change...ANYTHING just not 6 straight days!!!!!!!!!

The six days in a row are just to much and this schedule that Mark from FOP is pushing is no better. One issue always mentioned when 10 hours is discussed is cars. Not to upset my Lieutenant friends but there are plenty of take home cars that can be eliminated, starting with tact lieutenants, D/C's, IAD, and anyone else unless you are on 24 hour call. And IAD can have one car that whoever is on call the weekend get's to take home. The time for perks have come and gone, it's time to make things easier on everyone.

IAD Perks........You must be nuts!! The sergants get a car but are always on call as they leave their homes and go directly to assignments. The P/O's and P/A's dont get anything, and nobody,I repeat nobody, gets overtime at all or any holidays. If you think its so good you come down here and work

I am for a 10 day, the same as housing had previously.

IAD perks??

Another rat doing some research on this blog. I guess it's OK to work in IAD and not have to spell sergeant correctly. But I guess it's also OK for a sergeant to have a take home car so he can go directly from his house and stick it up some P.O.'s ass.

No overtime or no holidays??? Boo--fucking--Hoo. I have to work holidays, weekends, wherever the day off group lands. Remember those??

As far as your kind offer to come down to IAD and work--No thanks. I would rather keep my integrity, my self-respect, and my balls intact.

2080 hrs a year????? That should be uniform then. School P.O.'s only work 5 days a week. Burglary team (at least by us) 5 day work week. Forensics 5 day work week. many others I dont even know about 5 day work week. WTF???? No excuses....we ALL could do 10 hr or 12 hr days...or 5 on 3 off...whatever...just NOT 6 straight days!!!!!!!!

They do genious.
8hrs per day x 5days a week=40hrs
40hrs a week x 52 weeks in a year=2080hrs

NYPD does 5 on 2 off (1 week) 5 on 3 off (1 week) but they do 8 1/2 hour shifts allowing for shift change ex:
5:45a to 2:15p
1:45p to 10:15p
9:45p to 6:15a

Not bad your days off rotate up 1 every other week

I posted on this previously. I was with CPD for 8 years and left in 2006 for Orland Park. After seeing some of these posts and what you guys are dealing with Im glad I left. We deal with the same bullshit but on a smaller level, but I can live anywhere I want...Anyway the 6th work day. New lenox does 12's guys I know there seem to like it. 6am6pm visa versa. they have two teams a and b group a works wed thur fri and every other sat. group b works sun mon tues and every other sat. not to bad. We(Orland Park) work the 6 days however we are 6 and 3. extra day makes huge difference. we do fall short of the 2080 hours but not by much. the shortage of hours is made up by us having to attend mandatory meetings training ect on off time in three hour blocks(i went to one yesterday, a shoot, and was out of there in 45 mins). This works out nice especially for midnight officers. 3 days off is huge.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
