PARADES AND FESTIVALS

The last time I went to the South side Irish Parade was three years ago and I did so reluctantly. I brought my 4 year old son and a neighbors 6 year old daughter and I regretted every minute of it. We walked along 103rd street to the sights and sounds of drunk teenagers and adults alike. The obnoxious language and smell of cannabis was everywhere. Proud to be Irish? Hardly! As we neared Western Ave my 4 year old and the 6 year old neighbor had to witness teenage girls squatting in the alley and pissing. We watched the parade for a few minutes and I brought the kids home.
I have had enough of this disgusting display of crude behavior and unchecked public drunkenness. My family and a couple of families that we are friends with now take an annual trip to the Dells when the South Side Irish Parade is scheduled.
I say hurray to the department for wanting to take a stronger stance on enforcement. This event was originally intended for families to get together and celebrate their Irish heritage. It has now degenerated to a mass drunk fest drawing idiots from all over the city not just the southwest side. There is also an attitude amongst teens that this event is somehow a right of passage for them to act like drunken fools.
According to news reports the department made 50 arrest and hundreds of ANOVs were issued. Is this enough to curtail the stupidity? I seriously doubt it, but keep it up and hammer them harder next year.
I agree with the tougher stance the department has taken and I hope that they approach the other ethnic festivals with equal zeal i.e.
Cinco De Mayo in Douglas Park, Puertorican Fest in Humbolt Park and the Bud Billiken Parade.

Why can't the community vote whether or not the parade should continue? We already have a venue downtown that can support this type of crowd. You'll never see the neighborhood newspapers say anything bad about the parade. God forbid the community showed some type of maturity, and stopped the parade, the bar owners might get offended, and we wouldn't want that. How many battery incidents were never reported? Real family event when people use the drug store aisle as a toilet or when a paper quotes a community idiot who says, "if you can't make out with a girl who's a stranger at the parade, you never will". I wonder if this idiot has any daughters? Yeah lets bring the kids to this event. Oh and let's not forget the Cook County prisoner vans that trucks the criminals into our community, both before and after the parade to clean the streets. Yeah, great idea that is. Thank God it was a cold day. Let the community vote on the Parade. I say NO!

I agree-

I've skipped this parade and the downtown version for much the same reasons. Being Irish-it amazes me that these idiots think being Irish means you get drunk and act like a fool. Not one of them would bother picking up a book or participate in preserving their culture, honoring their ancestors who came here- worked hard, slaved and endured not only hardship but discrimination- and thrived despite the odds-not so their children, grandchildren and great grand children could be drunken morons but so they could have a better life.

Their ancestors are probably rolling in their graves.

My ancestors came here from Ireland during World War One and settled on the South Side. My family has lived there ever since. I went to the South Side "Irish" parade twice - once when it had just started, and again a couple of years ago when I took along some cousins of mine visiting from Ireland. After they saw what was going on around them they were more than a little disturbed that we called this an "Irish" parade. As one of them put it, "You should call it the South Side Jagoff Parade. I've never seen so many eejit jagoffs in one place in me entire life." The city ought to do away with it.

Its starting to feel like Bud Billiken there. Amazing!! Truly amazing that I would not bring my kids to Bud Billiken, Taste of Chicago, Back of the yard, Porto Rican parade, and now Irish Parade. Good job!!!! This is the category you now fall under. Congrats!!

Hey! In your photo, that's J-Fed on the phone right under the No Parking sign. That guy next to him is one of his undercover ex-fed bodyguards. Jody's taking a call from one of the rev's who's way on the other side wearing a green hat. He's pissed 'cause he just got anov'd. And right in front of jody, see that plug-ugly with the tatoos on her hand wolfin' down the buffalo wings? That's his wife! Personal trainer, my ass!

Everyone knows that they will never enforce Cinco , Bud or PR parades it's just not going to happen . Why , Because the city has NO Balls when it comes to the minority gatherings. They say screw it , it will be OK . We will see if J-Fed will act on his own or be a Puppet when the time comes .

Several years ago I was a tact lt detailed to the parade; after the fact I completed the required after event critique, and blasted the way things were done; Among suggestions were to move the parade route onto 103rd, from Campbell to Kedzie, AWAY from the bars, and to start it at 0900. It's supposed to be a family parade. I was told that following my suggestions would cost the bar owners too much money.

I skipped it and watched it on tv. No thanks

SCS,

Here is a sensational story for you to break, considering recents events and the timing I believe that the adage that,"the truth is stranger than fiction" applies.

The Tony Rezko trial is gaining ground. Tony Rezko's partner in his ill fated $50,000,000 Iraqi business venture(Companion Security) was a former Chicago PO named,Daniel T. Frawley.

Daniel T. Frawley's sister,Maureen Frawley,is a Sergeant of Police in Forest Park,Il. She is currently on medical leave and Forest Park is attempting to fire her along with two other officers,Dan Harder and Steve Johnsen. Sergeants Maureen Frawley,Dan Harder and Officer Andrea Caines successfully sued the Forest Park PD for sexual harrassment and bad behavior. Very interesting considering the recent arrest of CPD Officer Richard T. Schmidt by the FPPD at Slainte. There are also rumors that the tavern Slainte is owned by a Chicago fireman.

Forest Park police Sergeant Maureen Frawley, a close friend of Sgt. Dan Harder, had over $108,000 stolen from her home and three firearms. Subsequently the guns and money were returned. Frawley asked for the investigation to be dropped. Now the feds are invetigating.

Forest Park Sgt. Dan Harder was considered a suspect in the burglary. The money and handguns mysteriously appeared after Sgt. Dan Harder was questioned by the FPPD in a black nylon bag on Sgt. Maureen Frawley's front porch.

Worrisome Implications to Obama's Presidential Bid:

The reason Mr. Obama need worry is that Mr. Rezko’s accuser, Daniel Mahru, is not only a government witness in this present Rezko trial, but also was the lawyer for the original Companion Security deal and is reported to have pushed another Rezko partner in Companion Security, Daniel T. Frawley, to revive the Companion contract in the spring and summer of 2006 in conversation with both Governor Rod Blagojevich’s office and Senator Barack Obama’s office.

I agree, I would never go to the parade because of all the b.s. to put up with. But how do we know that the troublemakers are Irish? There is no way in telling what nationality they really are. We can't assume that they are Irish. We know what happens when mob mentality strikes, we start to see this crap no matter what nationality/race.
I am of Irish descent. My Grandparents came here from Ireland in the early 1900's. That is something we always keep in our hearts, not to be trotted out once a year waving flags, drinking on the street, acting like fools. There is a bit too much flag waving, chest pounding, and pride now a days, and that dosen't go just for the Irish. If those countries are soo great, we should go back to live there and see how proud we would be then. But I don't see that happening, as everyone is breaking down the doors to get into still the greatest country around. It would be nice to see some enthusiasm displayed for this country.

103rd st wont work
1 Railroad tracks(2 sets), you can't stop the trains
2 Where are people going to stand, on residents front lawns
3 It is a divided street, Western is not there is a reason there are no flower pots in the middle from 95th-115th sad but true the parade is the reason.

your right this is a supposed to be a family event but that was lost 25 years ago now it is just a excuse for people to get drunk

I didn't say that and in fact I doubt all of them are Irish- however, with the 'everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's day" theory-clearly they believe that's how all Irish behave-which is not true!

all excellent points regarding the parade. Its time has come and gone. Time to end the parade.

****WARNING,STAYOUT OF FOREST PARK!!!*****

Forset Park PD has a rocky history with outside law enforcement.

They locked up the Berwyn Chief of Police and his son,a Cook County ASA and another Berwyn PO involved in a bar brawl in 2005.

Ironically,CPD's Billy Kushner replaced the arrested Berwyn Chief Frank Marzullo.

http://www.nbc5.com/news/4424073/detail.html?z=dp&dpswid=2265994&dppid=65172

He said charges would be decided by the Illinois attorney general's office because Jerry Mazullo is a lawyer with the Cook County state's attorney's office. State's attorney's office spokesman John Gorman explained that if the state's attorney's office became involved in deciding charges, there would be a conflict of interest.

Frank Marzullo was a supporter of City Clerk Michael Woodword, who lost to former Democratic alderman Michael O'Connor in an election for mayor of Berwyn on the day of the fight, according to news reports.

Frank Marzullo was indicted on two counts of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony punishable by 2 to 5 years in prison. He also was charged with four counts of official misconduct, another Class 3 felony, for allegedly interfering with the Forest Park police investigation.

Russell Marzullo, Sr., was charged with three counts of aggravated battery and one count of unlawful restraint, a Class 4 felony punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison.

Frank Marzullo's son, Jerry Marzullo, the assistant state's attorney, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery.

Michael Fellows, a Berwyn police officer, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery. His alleged role in the fight was not immediately learned.

Another person, Charles Baugh, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery.

Today's Chicago Tribune reports:

A Berwyn firefighter acquitted last year with his father and uncle in a 2005 bar beating will get $160,000 in back pay after aldermen voted this week to override the mayor's veto to deny the settlement. This is the former Cook County ASA Jerry Marzullo.

Trust me, a crowd of blacks in the streets of Chicago would never get away with what I see at the SS Irish parade. I've worked Cinco De Mayo, BudB, all of 'em. "Southside IrishFest" is without a doubt, the WORST. You may have lost kids at BudB, but I've never had anyone UNDER 18 throw up on my shoes while I'm in full uniform because they're drunk, while their parents stand by in the same Goddamn inebriated condition. Cinco De Mayo has cleaned up it's act in the last year, as this country has focused on it's complex immigration issues.
You don't see nearly as many Mexicans waving those Cadillac sized flags around now, their festivities have become far more civilized. I'd work BudB any day over "SSIrishFest," which is what it should be called anyway. Glad I don't live out in Beverly, I'd stand on my lawn with bb bat for those drunken fools. And before the racial slants start pouring in, I'm a white PO.

I think a lot of residents took offense that black exempts were running the show this year at the south side Irish Parade, and had the arrests made. Get over it.
People were warned not to show their asses out there this year.
Somebody always wants to test the boundaries. Some of those that did got locked up and anov'd. As a longtime resident of Beverly, I applaud the bosses, Skahill and Alexander, who set a different tone this year. I know Skahill's gone on to IAD, but I for one wouldn't mind seeing her back at the helm for next year's parade, if we have to endure another one.
Note to Weis: BRING MORE WAGONS!!!

Mayor Richard Daley on Monday strongly defended a just-promoted senior police official who received early warnings from underlings complaining about a lack of action against rogue cops in the department's Special Operations Section.

Debra Kirby, an assistant deputy superintendent recently promoted to be the department's legal chief, is "very, very good, a very good attorney, a very good public servant, a very good police officer," Daley said.

"I interviewed her for superintendent," the mayor said. "That's how good she is."

HEY SCS...Help me out here.
Got into a debate with my partner over DUI. Help us settle this debate. The question is... Can you still be charged with a DUI if you BAC is under a .05? According to IVC...if your BAC is betweeen .05-.08 there is a presumtion that you are not under the influence of alcohol. My partner says that if your BAC is under .05 that the subject has to be released w/o charging. I disagree. It is my understanding that as long as you can show that alcohol impaired someones driving, they still can be charged.
Who is right?

Your parnter is correct and following the IVC LAW.

.08%> is legally intoxicated,Class A midemeanor.

.05-.07% is considered impaired and you can be convicted based on other evidence. Most Court houses in Cook County toss these unless its a PI or Fatal.

0.00-.04% is not under the influence or impaired. You cannot charge an adult with DUI.Zero tolerance applies only to drivers under 21.

Read away.Hope you didnt bet any money on this.

to answer the dui quetsion, is no you cannot charge with dui, because field sobriety tests cannot be evidence in court if the person has blow lower than a .05. fiels sobriety and driving violations can be used between .05-.08 to show that one was driving under the influence. i have seen p.o.'s charge individuals who blow below a .05, but it's tossed out of court. a watch commander should never have signed of on the charging,, so in reality only traffic citations should be issued in that situation
