SOUTHSIDE IRISH PARADE

A heads up from a reader for those who intend on attending this years parade.

Sunday is the Southside Irish Parade. Oak Lawn and the Ill State Police will have a DUI checkpoint on 111th st between Pulaski and Cicero. The surrounding Suburbs (Evergreen Park, Alsip, Blue Island, and Oak Lawn will have will have approximately 50 to 70 Ill State Police working DUI enforcement in the area. I can not give exact numbers because I don't want this coming back to me. As we know many Officers and their families go to this event and indulge in a "POP" or two. People need to keep in mind that with the new changes in DUI laws, a refusal to blow is an automatic one year suspension. For the Police that means no-pay status for that year. This info is not being given out to help anyone who decides to drink and drive avoid a DUI, but rather to hopefully avoid a big mess for themselves, their family and the department. Please leave the car at home and avoid being headline news monday.

I have no way of confirming this but if the end results are less drunk drivers then BRAVO!

Last year I made it no secret that I have finally had enough of seeing drunks pissing on lawns, girls squatting in alleys and 16 year olds toting coolers of beer as if this was "their" right of passage. Granted the east side of Western is suppose to be for families, however the sights and smells of the west side of Western can still overwhelm. This parade was created years ago by local kids riding their bikes through the neighborhood and over the years it has degenerated to a public display of bad drunken behavior. 20 years ago this didn't bother me but then again I didn't have small children. No, this Irishmen and his children will not be partaking in this years festivities along Western Avenue.

I hope that all of you that do attend have a wonderful time and please be responsible.

---------

Refusing to blow now means YOU WILL BE FIRED!!!

YOU MUST submit to an administrative blow and it WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN CRIMINAL COURT!!!!!!!!!!!

Reference: ( FROM: http://www.chicagofop.org/cu020909.html

ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT RULING 02/05/09

The Supreme Court of Illinois has denied the Lodge’s petition for leave to appeal the case of People v. Carey. As has already been reported, the Appellate Court ruled that the use of an administrative breathalyzer examination at a criminal proceeding is permissible. The Lodge filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking an opportunity to argue our position. The Supreme Court denied our request. Accordingly, the ruling of the Appellate Court remains in effect. Evidence obtained by IAD, whether for a criminal case or an administrative case, will be admitted into evidence at any subsequent criminal proceeding, as long as the recovery of the evidence does not violate the exclusionary rule. To be clear, the fact that evidence was obtained administratively does not in and of itself violate the exclusionary rule and will be admitted into evidence. The Lodge will continue to monitor what it believes was an incorrect ruling by the Appellate Court and will inform the membership of any new developments.

In other words you are better off banging your head up against the wall if you want to get buzzed!

Of your drivers license! I'm sure it's been a long time since you wrote a ticket but the law change and instead of a six month suspension-it will be 12 months.

As for being fired- lowly no clout peons get fired but there are those who's clout will protect them as long as there is not a video tape.

Amen, brother (or sister.)

Last weekend I was talking to a group of guys in Ottawa (of all places!) They were telling me how they come to this thing every year just to get drunk and act stupid. No wives or girlfriends are allowed to come in case they get "lucky." Not one of them was under 35 years old!

One of them is related to a copper who lives in Mt. Greenwood. He invites all his loser friends from the suburbs for this drunk-fest. Wise up you morons. Why don't your dipshit buddies have anything like this in their lily-white suburbs?? Because it ruins the neighborhood!!!

This is a Great Family Day! The spirit of this parade should not be spoiled by the few that turn out for drinking too much with displays of public intoxication. Please take this into consideration the parade draws annually close to 300,000 people nearly 5 times the crowd of a Bears Home Game or 8 times that of a White Sox or Cubs game. With all the tail-gating & bar hopping that goes on at one of these sporting events I believe the crowds at the parade are much better behaved. Weather permitting administrator to this blog - please take in the parade and enjoy the spirit, sights and sounds of a great celebration and don't let a few revelers ruin it!

It is unfortunate that many community celebrations have become titty flashing, hootin' and hollerin' drunkfests ala Mardi Gras.

Maybe I am naive and sentimental, but I miss the old days sometimes.

I couldn't agree with you more. The only problem is I live 2 blocks from Western and have a large gathering every year. My gathering has grown to a child freindly event but we still take the kids to see the parade and its a mess. Asshole teens from the suburbs who disrepect the neighborhood and the police. Its a shame it can't be 30 degrees and raining this year to keep the jerks away.

Hey, parade organizer, who do you work for - Daley? Rugai? A beer company?

As to your comment that only "the few" get drunk. That "few" numbers in the tens of thousands you moron! That's more than "a few," and that number grows every year!

You think having 300,000 people pissing all over your neighborhood, parking anywhere they please and barfing on your front lawn is fun! Ask those who live in Wrigleyville about all the suburban assholes who piss on their porches and break bottles on their cars and sidewalks. What fun, huh?!

Great Family Day! Oh yeah! If you have children, I pity them. Let's expose our kids to the unbridled displays put on by crowds of irresponsible idiots. Their behavior gets worse every year and it's only a matter of time until there is a very tragic event at this so-called "parade." Then that will the end of it. Good riddance!!

This is usually a weather dependent event in terms of turnout. But I agree, suburbanites have ruined this event, when it was just teens and young adults from 022, evergreen and oak lawn, they knew what they could do and couldn't do. Now these fuckheads from the outer suburbs who have no contact with the police and also can't hold their drink are shocked when put hands on them and lock them up, not much different then the same demograph when they field trip downtown or north.

The new DUI law is draconian and should be repealed. Driving drunk is stupid and dangerous. But there are degrees. There are no degrees with this law. You get arrested for DUI, your life is totally screwed; long before your are even found guilty by a jury of your peers. It is in essence a life sentence; it is cruel and unusual punishment.

Hey no doubt we all grieve with and feel bad for families of victims of drunk drivers; and we do need to try to reduce accidents caused by intoxicated people. But here, this law is MADD; it is out of control it has gone too far.

Police officers sworn to uphold the U.S Constitution need to use their conscience when implementing this law. Know that when someone is arrested for a DUI now, their life is going to drastically change and the punishment will continue to punish, and punish. And it doesn't just punish the poor slob who happened to have maybe three or four "Pops" it punishes his or her entire family, severely. When it hits close to home you'll know, you'll say, wow this punishment is way too severe for the "crime" committed.

Deterrent, sure we need deterrents, but this is way overboard. This is America still! let's all get together and repeal this law and implement some sane law that combats drunk driving accidents but doesn't destroy families and lives because somebody stopped out after work for a drink with co-workers or some people get together for a few drinks with old school mates. It happens all the time. And not every time does somebody die because of it, so it is not that severe of a "crime" in each instance to justify the quite frankly assinine punishments.

I can only imagine that you do not have children because if you did this event wouldn't even show up on the radar as one of the Greatest days and or events of the year. Watching my little ones rip open the Christmas presents that Santa left them is still the GREATEST DAY at my house. Our 4th of July family cookout that includes over 70 cousins, aunts and uncles is the event we look forward to with our extended family and then its topped off with a local fireworks show. The ooohs and aahs from the little ones makes this day another one of my favorites.
This is not to knock you or the families that still attend the SSI parade but I think you are viewing it through Rose of Tralee colored glasses.
I too have decided that I will not be subjecting my children to all the crap that comes with one of the GREATEST DAYS. Now if that qualifies me as an asswipe, then that's a cross I'm willing to bare.
By the way, the feast of St. Patrick is this Tuesday, March 17th.

"This is America still! let's all get together and repeal this law and implement some sane law that combats drunk driving accidents but doesn't destroy families and lives because somebody stopped out after work for a drink with co-workers or some people get together for a few drinks with old school mates."

I'm hoping you're single, under 25 and unmarried and that's why you make such an idiotic post. Why are you even a police officer? I know you're a moron. We won't 'all get together' about this. I'd bet most of the readers on this board don't remotely share your views.

They did implement a sane law that may stop someone from destroy families and lives because someone stopped for a drink-it's the one we currently have- asshole. You're obviously some drunk that can't see that the lives of my family are more important to me than your need to drive after you've been drinking/celebrating. Get a designated driver, dumbfuck, and you can still drink and not hurt my family.

I think you need to grow up-the law doesn't destroy families- the drinking does, the choice to drink and drive does.

In America, my family has the right to go to work, get home from church, get home from school or social events without paying the ultimate price for your selfish indulgence. Their right to live trumps your need to have a couple of pops and get behind the wheel-btw-a cab is cheaper than a lawyer.

As far as your "draconian" comment-Look at it this way-a first time offense in El Salvator results in death by a firing squad, in Bulgaria, the second offense, execution. Having to pay a stiff fine, go to rehab, have a breath machine put on your car are a lenient in comparison.

"You get arrested for DUI, your life is totally screwed; long before your are even found guilty by a jury of your peers. It is in essence a life sentence; it is cruel and unusual punishment."

If you're killed by a drunk driver, you don't get a trial by a jury of your peers, you don't get a life sentence and having your life taken away for no crime-is cruel and unusual punishment.

Years ago- a friend of mine on this department-after the drunk her car, her sister was in a coma for months, her child was killed in the crash, and her sister had to lean to speak all over again. To her credit, she began to campaign to educate people about the dangers of drinking and driving. At one rally, some one asked her how long drunk drivers should be punished. As she was still stuggling to speak, her other sister began to answer the question for her. She grabbed the microphone from her sister and responded "As long as the victim is".

Some time later she died as the result of her injuries.

So- as far your life being totally screwed up - you did it to yourself-no one put a gun to your head and made you drink- no one made you get into a car and drive after drinking - no one screwed up your life but you.

That can't be said for the victims. They didn't do anyting wrong, they certianly don't deserve their punishment and no one deserves being crippled or killed because you're a sophmoric brat that's got such a small view of the world that your need to drink and drive is more important than someone's life.

Next time you're with your friends or family, holding your kids, celebrating one of your parent's birthdays-try picking out which one of them that would be expendable for your right to drink and drive. Who would you give up so you can have a few pops with your classmates. Who doesn't deserve tehir life.

You might have to rethink your position-if you have a heart or a soul.

Picked up the Red Eye the other day. You should see all the bars that are having bus trips to the SSI parade. I know it's been this way for years but for some reason it just annoys me now. Stay up NORTH assholes.

SCS,I initially wondered why you would warn parade goers of the troopers being out in force. I thought why warn the idiots. Then I saw your statement that if it means having less drunk drivers bravo. So I guess you're correct. You could probably publish the notice on the front page of every publication and you'd still have the idiots driving drunk. So I agree,if it stops one drunk,so be it.

If we all or most of us hate this event as much as we do and I hate it for all the reasons published here, why do we have it? Why do we invite the idiots into our neighborhood every year to use it as one big urinal? Why do we risk having our family members killed by a drunk driver? It's time to end the parade or at least let the community vote on whether to continue it or not. Damn I hate this parade and yes I'm Irish too.

Post 13MAR09 0744 hrs. I compliment you as being a caring parent and likewise having several children all under 10 years old you should be commended by caring for your youngsters, however let me inform you that The Southside Irish Parade starts off with a morning family mass @ St. Cajetan's Parish with a family mass, then off to breakfast @ a friends where the children play in the park and get their faces painted. Off then to the parade that honors a noble Grand Marshall like St. Baldrick's this season and see all the local grade schools, high schools and family clans marching not the politicians like downtown. After the parade off to a local grade school that hosts a family party in it's gym. So an A+ to you as a parent but with your narrow minded comments you are an Asswipe!

10:13 is right. We should set aside a time when it's OK to drive drunk. Like today for example (SSI parade), it should be legal from 5pm-10pm. That way everyone can get home without spending all that money on a cab and "combats drunk driving accidents but doesn't destroy families and lives because somebody stopped out after work for a drink with co-workers or some people get together for a few drinks with old school mates."

I'm kidding.

10:13, you are a piece of garbage. It's the ones who are slightly buzzed (forget about the hammered ones) who don't see the little kid about ready to cross the crosswalk at an intersection from your right while you're looking left, you hit the gas and hit the child/parent/adult...whatever. You're the prick who won't have the money to pay this person's medical bills, you're the person who prolly has a suspened D/L, in fact, I can promise you that you're the person who will hit this kid in the street and leave the scene.

I hate to say it but I'm ready for this parade to take a hiatus. I enjoy drinking, I'm no angel by any means. However, I went to the parade today with my four year old son, just me and him enjoying some semi father-son bonding, I know, we could've picked a better atmosphere but he loves parades. The language/actions on the drunks was so irritating. At one point, I was waiting at a porta-potty(111th/Campbell) because my son had to go. Right in front of me, some scum start jaw-jacking. One guy almost trips over my son. It took everything I had to not break this guys teeth. Number one, I'm on the job so it wouldn't look good. Number two, I prolly would've gotten beaten down by his "boys" To think that could've happened in front of my own son makes me sick to my stomach.

So you know what I did? NOTHING. I had to let my son watch this and hope he didn't absorb any of it. Do I feel like a giant VAG, absolutely, but, I thought maybe I made a good decision to some extent. Not coming on here for anyones approval, simply stating that the parade is great but the drunks are out of control. These assholes were from Oak Forest because they had their cute "bus trip" t-shirts on.

I did run into many great people on the same token.

Take my post for what you will.

Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009.

Here we go....this will pass quickly if they do it the same way they did the stimulus package. Put a half dozen democrats in a room to write it, and bring it back for a vote.

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h45/show

Very Important for you to be aware of a new bill HR 45 introduced into the House. This is the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009. We just learned yesterday about this on the Peter Boyles radio program.

Even gun shop owners didn't know about this because it is flying under the radar. To find out about this - go to any government website and type in HR 45 or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of
2009. You will get all the information.

Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm - any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless:

*It is registered.
*You are fingerprinted.
*You supply a current Driver's License.
*You supply your Social Security #.
*You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any
time of their choosing.
*Each update - change or ownership through private or
public sale must be reported and costs $25 - Failure to
do so you automatically lose the right to own a firearm
and are subject up to a year in jail.
*There is a child provision clause on page 16 section 305
stating a child-access provision. Gun must be locked
and inaccessible to any child under 18.

They would have the right to come and inspect that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children and fine is punishable for up to 5 yrs. in prison.

If you think this is a joke - go to the website and take your
pick of many options to read this. It is long and lengthy. But, more and more people are becoming aware of this. Pass the word along. Any hunters in your family - pass this along.

Peter Boyles is on this and having guests. Listen to him on KHOW 630 a.m. in the morning. He suggests the best way to fight this is to tell all your friends about it and "spring into action". Also he suggests we all join a pro-gun group like the Colorado Rifle Association, hunting associations, gun clubs and especially the NRA.

This is just a "termite" approach to complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society to the point we have no defense - chip away a little here and there until the goal is accomplished before anyone realizes it.

This is one to act on whether you own a gun or not. If you take my gun, only the criminal will have one to use against me.

HR 45 only makes me/us less safe. After working with convicts for 26 years I know this bill, if passed, would make them happy and in less danger from their victims.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.45:
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h45/show
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...xpd?bill=h111-45

Please... Copy and send this out to EVERYONE in the USA ..

The parade yesterday was the worst one. There were many arrests. At one point they thought the lock up at 22 was full. There were battery in progress calls every 2-3 minutes. I never saw so many ambulances responding to the neighborhood during a parade. The drunk kids are getting to be a real problem. Never so many fights either. Any one know what the big incidents at CVS drugs on 111th st was about?

I hope the parade committee moves the start time to 9:00 am next year. Also, I hope they make all buses not participating in the parade park at Dan Ryans woods on 87th & Western where their passengers can get off the bus and on the bus after the parade.

I totally disagree with you. Anyone with a 2nd grade education or better knows by now the destruction and suffering that comes from drunk drivers. If you haven't gotten the memo by now, then you don't deserve a drivers license.

It should be a two year suspension and mandatory jail time. Maybe then the drunk drivers would get the message.....naaaa, they got people like you making excuses for them. Grow up.

I just love some of the commentary here.I turned off 111th Longwood drive and head to Western ave.In the very short trip from Longwood to Western I observed 3 good fights going on 2 males pissing on 111th street a female throwing up on the hood of a car and 2 females pissing in bushes.Yeah this is a great event alright and further more many of these pieces of shit are right from the neighborhood and dont come from afar. There is PLENTY of local blame to go around also.

I find all this talk about it being bad for children grossly exaggerated i have gone to the parade for my whole life and for the neighborhood kids like me it is seen more as a celebration of our community, yeah the people from the burbs are disrespectful but we do get to make money off of them in the local bars, and most neighborhood people retire from the parade to family gathering.

I Think SCS needs to post this as a topic.

This is from a web site The Shootist … This is the start of what the Obama administration is trying to do and it effect all of us in law enforcement … the shortage in ammunition is real and it here already…

…You may not be aware of it, but there is a severe shortage of ammunition available for sale to the public across the country, causing problems for shooters, hunters, and reloaders everywhere.

Now, apparently the Obama administration, realizing they cannot move against private firearms ownership since the landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Washington D.C./Heller case, has made their move in another way.

By cutting off the resale of expended military ammunition to remanufacturers, they have put a stranglehold on the nation's ammunition supply...

JUST OUT NO SOUTH SIDE IRISH PARADE NEXT YEAR.

IT JUST GOT TOO BIG. SO COME ON OVER TO THE NORTH SIDE IRISH PARADE,

Anonymous said...

I don't know what happens down there but wow it seems to have gotten out of control. Thank also the radio stations and north side bars that offer shuttles to the parade as well. Here is a press release from today regading next year.

For Immediate Release 25Mar2009

For confirmation contact Mary Beth Sheehan (773-393-8687)

RE: SOUTH SIDE IRISH ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE PLANS FOR 2010

Let this release serve as notice that the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is not planning to stage a parade in its present form in March of 2010.

This decision was not arrived at lightly. For 31 years, this parade was a staple of the Beverly/Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood communities – a celebration of faith, family and heritage that was cherished by thousands. Founded in 1979 by the Hendry and Coakley families, it was intended to instill in this community an appreciation for the Irish heritage that so many of its residents share.

This parade was an eagerly anticipated annual event which celebrated families, many of whom have created decades long traditions that we hope will endure. But what began as a neighborhood parade is now an event of international proportions. More than 300,000 people typically flock to the Beverly area each year, and the sheer volume has become more than the neighborhood can reasonably accommodate. With these numbers comes a collection of issues that strain both the host community and those individuals charged with effectively managing the crowds. Additionally, the amount of resources required to launch the event has become overwhelming to the community.

The Committee would like to thank the tens of thousands of parade faithful who supported this event for more than 30 years. The multigenerational families who turned out along Western Avenue each year, along with the fine organizations featured in the Line of March, were the essence of what made this parade so special. We would also like to thank the Chicago Police Department for the effort they put into managing the ever-growing crowd while working to maintain the dignity of the event.

While we regret the need to alter such a fine tradition, the Committee feels that suspending the South Side Irish Parade in its present form is the just and responsible thing to do. It is our hope, however, that this will not mean an end to the neighborhood’s annual celebration. The Committee will work to create a series of alternate events that will return us to what the parade’s founders had in mind – a neighborhood-friendly celebration of Irish heritage. Please look for news of our plans later this year.

Thank you for your support,

The South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee

♣♣♣♣SOUTH SIDE IRISH LIVES ON♣♣♣

ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS IS 3 THINGS ...

1st THING 1st !!! How can they take away something that PEOPLE been going 2 for YEARS!!!!! .. It's A TIME to Have Fun, Be with your FRIENDS/FAMILY.. Ya get drunk (which we all do) and we all know drunk people are STUPID!!! THATS IS WUT MAKES IT FUN !!! "" HELLOOOO "" !!

2nd..All You People say .. that people are rude, and disrespectful, and your all not!?!??! before you talk about otherS look @ yourself 1st!!!!! .. When.. you where 19 20 21.. You never did stupid things.. half of the people are 19 20 21 22 young and just want to have fun. IT ONLY COMES ONCE A YEAR !! NOT LIKE 2 OR 3 OR 4 TIMES!!! then i could see a problem..

3RD.. They say the cops cant control people. well how about they ask other cops from other towns to help out on the BIG DAY. (dont think it would be a problem)they should be pleased to help on the big SOUTH SIDE IRISH PARADE!!.. Now, i wonder to myself how the "hell" can down-town have a parade & i kno people drink & get drunk. & there are fights..But now there not talking about stopping the parade down there!!
((*** there are twice as more people down town then the south side***))

..NOO IT NOT RIGHT TO TAKE AWAY THE PARADE!! ITS ONCE A YEAR HELLO ..!!!

Why do we invite the idiots into our neighborhood every year to use it as one big urinal?

Isn't that what Chicago is becoming anyway - a big urinal!
