FYI

A reader was wondering how many sergeants we currently have and what our budgeted strength is.
Here are a few tidbits to chew on:

We presently have 1233 sergeants.

I can not confirm but I believe our budgeted strength is 1300.

This year 5 sergeants will turn 63 and will be forced to retire.

Within 3 years that number will grow by an additional 38.

115 sergeants have presently maxed out and within 5 years that will grow by an additional 130.

How big do you think this next class will be? How far will the city go on the list?

we used to be budgeted for 1350...

Thank you for the update. Would you know off hand how long the current list can stay up before they can retest again???

they can do anything they want to- sergeants tests-lts tests-whatever...

I think the 1998 lts test went up past (in legit/rank order...) somewhere between number 230-270...the 2001 test went to 136...and it took them 5-6 years to do that...the 2006 test/2007 retest has taken only 20 off the exam (14 non-merit-1 launched for a residency beef so now they are up to 15 on the list

It depends on budgets and politics and if the 'mass exodus' from the department actually occurs. You can cruise the IClear system to get a seniority list and then look at who's over 50, who's over 60 (free insurance), who has time in grade and who has enough time on the job.

You'll get an idea of how many could walk out the door on a moments notice...barring new off-spring from second marriages...kids in college...divorce settlments, etc.

When the order came out in 1993, it scheduled promotional exams every two years- and we know how that's worked out...

1998 Lt's test went in rank order to about 170. The rest were meritorious. I was in the low 170's and didn't make it.

What did Ginger do?I heard she clouted for some of the SOS guys.

Wednesday's Scumtimes to carry a story about our new Sup wanting to get rid of our 6 day work week in lieu of 3/12's. I'm all for it. The less days I have to work the more time with my family and away from idiots. The 10 hour day should have been approved 8 years ago but the FOP lied and didn't give it to us. I've PERSONALLY never met anyone from housing that had a bad thing to say about the 10 hour day. Shifts might be less than ideal as apposed to now, but if you only have to do them 3 days a week, why tje hell not. Go for it boss. It would be a great way to start your tenure here.

Not that far on the list- closer to about 160 in rank order. Overall more were made due to merit.

Oh c'mon...that would never happen, SOS supervisors treated special? Not in this city. I'm appalled anyone would suggest such a thing.

hey- do we know if Jody is going to include supervisoers in the 12 hour-3 day work week?

Since he is only talking to P.O.s now-will he ever talk to us?

I'd be thrilled to work three days- throw in suspending the residency rule, give us 6 counties to live in and we'd all be very happy!

Those are lts numbers right? Does anyone have the promotional numbers for sgts?

12 hour day will work for supervisors and will work for the district as a powere shift

scs can you direct me to where the 30% came from for merit promotions i have looked at both contracts and do not see the 30% level for merits 30% is not written in stone anywhere

it's usually written into the conditions of the exam itself-just like having XXX amount of time or XXX amount of education....

30% merit = clout hacks. It's shameful, a slap in the face to those who studied hard on the test and never make it because of the 30% who took stole the qualified test taker's earned promotion. I hope the new supt really looks hard at this, makes a wise decision and lower the merit promotions or make an "executive decision" and put a final end to it.

How many Sgts will they promote off the actual list (not including clout merits)....any idea?

seems that ginger or someone in 19th ward office has been selling spots on fire and police lists for 1500 to 2000 bucks a throw and not delivering either maybe thats why feds hit 19th ward office last summer at 9 00 am on a sundy with a warrant and took some stuff with them

apparently I live in the wrong ward...

CHecked today-1230 sergeants...more going every day....

Unfortunately that will never happen because there would not be enough minority promotions. Affirmative action is the genesis of the "merit" system.

Yes blame the minorities cause you can't score well enough on the test. Newsflash most of those promoted on merit are white. Look it up if you are smart enough. Typical response I didn't get promoted cause I'm white waw waw. Look in the mirror and just face it, you are not supervisor material, how did the rest of the white man get promoted? I'll tell you merit.

Anonymous said...

yes- merit was to help with 'race norming' but they don't expose the list because it probably isn't being used for that exactly- clout wins over race or whatever-everytime!

The last sergeant list got up to 362 off the list. I spoke with number 365, and he was pretty salty about it, and I had no reason to doubt him. If you are under 300 you should be a lock, anything after that then you are on the bubble.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
