NEW WEAPONS ORDER

I found this on the departments website.

Striker-fired pistols manufactured by Smith and Wesson, Springfield Armory, and Glock have been approved

The calibers of 9mm Luger (Parabellum), .40 S&W, and .45 ACP have been approved

Department members will be allowed to transition to striker-fired pistols as their primary weapon after they have completed a voluntary transition course during off-duty hours

Transition courses will consist of either 24 hours of instruction for revolver officers or 16 hours of instruction for semi-automatic officers

Transition Courses are being planned for the last three months of 2007; a schedule of courses has not yet been posted

Department members will not be allowed to carry a striker-fired pistol until they have either completed their basic recruit training with a striker-fired pistol or completed the required transition course

Department members will not be required to transition to a new firing system

Department members will be allowed to transition to a semi-automatic pistol as their primary weapon in lieu of their prescribed revolver

Ok that's something nice to hear but I have a question: What if I would want to still retain my beretta 9 mm as my primary weapon and just plan too buy a striker fire weapon as my secondary weapon, should I still go through the 16 hrs training before I can carry one as my off duty weapon? I was just planning to buy the compact or sub-compact .40 or .45 to carry as my off duty weapon.

A 500 round course of fire is in the training program. You will be required to bring your own ammo.

In the current sgt's class, does anyone know what number they made up to off the new sgt.'s list? Some people say we are down a ton of Sgts, does anyone know of many? I was in the 80's. Thank you.

Sorry to say.. the list is going to be taken down. All promotions will be 100% Merit.. just like Captains.

The new Supt. C. WILLIAMS will be taking ALL people out of IAD as the first crew of Sgts.

The 500 rounds must be duty ammo. Any of you who carries reloads is a goof. By reloading your own ammo you are opening up yourself to civil lawsuits should you shoot someone with one on duty.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
