NATIONAL FOP SUPPORTS CAMBRIDGE PD SGT

From the FOP Grand Lodge website

Statement Of Chuck Canterbury, National President Fraternal Order Of Police In Response To President Obama's Comments On The Gates Case 07/23/2009

I am very concerned by President Obama's statement made last night in connection with the Gates matter. President Obama, in his remarks, stated that he had not been on the scene and did not know what had happened; having said that, he then characterized the arresting officer as having acted "stupidly".

Police officers, like all Americans, rely on President Obama's leadership to guide us through an extraordinarily difficult period of change in a variety of areas: to be successful in this effort, he will need the help and support of all of us. Statements of this nature, made without the facts, do little to narrow the void of distrust that too often separates the community from the men and women who work to keep it safe.

Sergeant James Crowley and the men and women of the Cambridge Police Department have our full support as they work their way through this matter.

In the short time he has been in office, President has taken a number of steps which have been very well received by the law enforcement community, such as additional funding for law enforcement grants, rejuvenation of the COPS Program, and a strong commitment to the Public Safety Officers Benefit Program, to name just a few. The President's Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security have actively solicited our counsel on public safety issues.

I have advised the White House and the Justice Department of my disappointment with the remarks, and look forward to an appropriate resolution.

It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies, predators, and parasites. Mr. Gates may have been verbally abusive (entirely appropriate when one's home has been invaded), but he in no way threatened Sgt. Crowley. WHY did Crowley refuse to identify himself as Mr. Gates requested? WHY did Crowley arrest Mr. Gates when no genuine threat was present? I'm no fan of Obama, but his comments in this instance are entirely appropriate. I hope that Sgt. Crowley is fired for this abusive over-reaction.

Speaking of those who prejudge:
It is unfortunate that so many cops act as bullies, predators, and parasites.
Gates' home was not invaded. Sgt Crowley responded to a call of a break in (burglary in progress)and was met by the caller who gave him further info.
Sgt. Crowley identified himself to Gates on two separate occasions. Sgt. Crowley asked Gates for ID to show that he was indeed the resident.
Satisfied that Gates was indeed the resident Sgt. Crowley attempted to leave but was followed by Gates who continued to berate the Sgt. While outside the residence Sgt. Crowley warned Gates twice that he was being disorderly (a misdemeanor crime).
Gates continued to "act a fool" and was placed under arrest. He was not arrested because he was a threat.
So hope all you want, Sgt. Crowley will not be fired for acting appropriately. Keep in mind there were several witnesses on hand including the original caller.
Too bad the Harvard scholar had to act like an uneducated ghetto fool.

Don't be so quick to paint Sgt. Crowley as a saint in this debacle.
At some point, he knew he was dealing with the actual homeowner, and decided to place him under arrest anyway, for being "disorderly" on his own property. If anyone thinks this is ok, let me know how you feel when this happens to YOU, or someone in your family.
I expect the citizens to act the way they usually do. They aren't trained, experienced law enforcement officers. This Sgt. is allegedly an instructor as well.
In the end, I think the Sgt. lost it, and moved into "I'll show you" mode, and that's shameful to all of us (or at least it should be, especially with him being a SUPERVISOR). Rank and file expect a lot of us, as do upper mgt. of our respective agencies; if we can so easily fall into these traps while performing our duties, what kind of example are we setting for the troops?

SCS, I personally called Sgt. Crowley and identified myself as a fellow officer, father, and sergeant. I believe that he did everything absolutely correct. The ONLY thing you might fault the sergeant for is cuffing the offender in FRONT.

Dam pigs, hahahahahahahahahahaha!

The next time your neighbor is on his own front porch blaring music or continuously remaining loud and is disturbing your peace, feel free not to call the Police and have him arrested. After all, he is on his own property, right?
