AR-15

From the Drudge Report. The department recently changed the weapons order to now include the Glock and Springfield Arms XD among others. The Miami Police Department under the guidance of Chief John Timoney has decided its time to really arm its police.
Years ago, law enforcement specialists like SWAT teams were the only officers to carry assault weapons, but now even small town police agencies are expanding access to the AR-15, a civilian version of the military M-16 rifle.

Patrol officers in Danbury, Conn., have been allowed to carry the weapons since 2003. Police departments in Merced, Calif., and Waterloo, Iowa, have deployed them in all patrol vehicles for several years. In Stillwater, Okla., about 70 miles west of Tulsa, every police patrol officer is issued an AR-15.

Officers in Los Angeles have been equipped with the weapons even longer, soon after a 1997 gunfight outside a bank where police faced a man armed with an AK-47. Officers in that situation had to go to a nearby gun store to get high-velocity weapons.

Timoney said it has become apparent over the last year that Miami officers need the option of more powerful weapons.

At this time the department doesn't have the money to equip everyone but if an officer wants it now he has the option to purchase his own.

I wish we could get our own. At least let us register them so we can defend our home and families.

I think that every Sgt should have the option of signing out a long gun with the taser.

Late evening - morning rush hour there is noone that has anything heavy.

It's just a matter of time!!!!

Where did you see this?

CPD will NEVER get AR15s for the patrol cars.

King richard will never allow this to happen.

Give them to all supervisors, who are willing, and meet any training requirements.

Had you read the article you would of seen it too.....
"Officers interested in the guns will have to undergo two days of training and be certified to use the weapons. The police department doesn't yet have money to purchase the guns, and if officers want to use them now, they will have to pay for them, Timoney said."

No offense to any sgt. but what good does it do to have sgt's equipped with these weapons and not the po's? Same with the tasers, it makes no sense that a po has to call on the air for a sgt to come tase someone. By the time the sgt has gotten there the struggle could have already been over. Instead you know have the situation in which po's get hurt along with the offenders. If I recall correctly when getting trained for the taser one of the selling points is that it will cut down on officers and offenders getting hurt because you can handle things from a distance and do not have to physically put hands on someone.

Now what good is it for a sgt to have a ar15 when a po is in a horrible gun fight and the sgt is on the otherside of the district, in the station on something, or already tied up on another job? Makes no sense to me unless front line workers are the ones prepaired. Again no offense, but sgt are not front line workers to the extent as po's.

Also they are now numerous sgt who do not take out or even use the taser because it will generate a trr which of course is watch for the behavor program.

You cant carry a 40 year old pump Dept. shotgun because the king and all his liberal hacks think they are to intimidating to the fine citizens of the City of Chicago.

If you think they will ever allow the street officers to carry a AR-15 you are just SOFT!

They think they have just done a great thing be allowing the officers to carry the new approved weapons.

What you don't realize is that the rest of the county has been carring the so called new weapons for 20 years. And they give you no
real additional tactical advantage. The thugs have also been carring them for years.

Then on top of that, they force you to purchase your own ammunition and must give up your days off witout pay to get trained!
And for what to carry a plastic gun made in some 3rd world county?

Great job on this one FOP!

I just love all the guys who came on this job in the last 12 years saying it's great I can now carry a 45.

Whats the big deal. I have been carrying a 45 since 1992. The only advantage is that as I get older and can no longer hit what I am shooting at, I can at least set the bad guy on fire with the muzzzle flash. And yes, sometimes the loud report makes them crap their pants.

Your best bet is not to shoot anyone at all. And do what they are teaching the new guys in the accademy. Lock yourself in your squad car and wait until help arrives.

Oh, by the way leave that Plastic gun at home, before you accidently shoot your self with it. This will be the bulk of the shots fired by Police cases in the future. Officers accidently shooting themself with these so called new guns.

I have been told the Dept has their terminology for this. It will no longer be an accidental discharge, it will be a negligent
discharge. Therefore you will be liable not the dept. and you will be fired and sued.

Nice, Thanks FOP..

Hey Sarge , You know as well as I that this dept. is not weapons oriented and never will be, at least in our life time. Do you or anyone else think that the CPD will ever put automatic weapons in a squad car. We were lucky to get the 12 ga. shotguns into the vehicles in 1969 if only for a few years until Jesse and his kind bitched about the guns. Saying that they scare the public . BS. Then we had to place them in the trunks (which sucked) and then they took them away. You will never be able to place an suto weapon in the vehicles or in the stations . The city just wont let it happen . God Bless the cops on the street .

Dream on folks. If North Korea was to invade the brass would not allow AR15s.

Unfortunately it will never happen in Chicago and we all know it. We have a mayor and ministers who attribute all violence to guns, it would be too hard to blame the asshole gangbangers behind the trigger (not to mention all the votes lost).

Off the topic, I know there was just a new Sgt's class but when are they going to have a new class? Any news would be grrrreat.

Hey Sarge, I just got done earlier today with an interview with the USDOJ in regards to problems in the 8th district that I have witnessed and have proof of. You should probably tell your buddies in 008 that they are being watched. I am sick of upholding the law and watching you guys skate around it. Isn't anonymity wonderful. One of your own is cooperating with the feds.Watch your back. This is going to be big.

i heard that names are going to be requested for meritorious promotion to Sgt. by the end of this month, so another list must be planned, and soon. the few they made with the lastclass barely made a dent!

Sarge....
Tell me you are not a merit puke.
You seem too well rounded to have had your hand out begging for a promotion.

Yea, I know. None of the merit Sgt. or Lt.s ever asked. They were approached and begged to take the spot because of all the wonderful work they did. Usually in a special unit or HQ.

Think Lt. J F of A/1 is merit.
Nope, he's a policeman. Not a politician.

No I'm not merit and have only met two sergeants on this job ever to admit to being merit. I truely believe that when a promotion test is taken the list should be published.
Have I given the impression that I am a recipient of merit promotion?

Well I don't qualify under any of the above. I busted my ass studying and I ranked in the top 5% of test takers. I didn't sign up for any test prepping services and I wasn't part of a super secret study group. I studied all by myself. You my friend need to get over the fact that you either didn't study or you really aren't as knowledgeable as you think.
Your repeated insinuation that all those who wear a white shirt are the product of cronyism has become tiresome. Man up and take some personal responsibility and stop acting like a whiny child.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, SCS, for saying what many of us Sgts. have thought to ourselves for some time! Far too many patrolmen assume that anyone who wears a white shirt has had the job handed to them in exchange for graft, sexual favors, whatever.
While I cannot deny that in some small percentage of cases it may well be true (this IS Chicago), most of us who wear the white shirt got it through determination
and good study habits before taking the promotional exams.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
that can and is read by people other than Chicago Police Officers.
