City's law is next target if foes win in Supreme Court
On Tuesday, the district government appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. If the court takes the case, as many observers believe it will, it could place Chicago's handgun ban, as well as similar laws nationwide, in jeopardy.
At a news conference Tuesday on the steps of the district's police headquarters, Mayor Adrian Fenty said the city had no choice.
"In the end, the bottom line is that we do not need more guns in this city," said Fenty, flanked by more than a dozen police officers. "The only possible outcome with more handguns is more violence."
As an example of the urgency of the situation, district officials cited the death Sunday of a teenager who was shot by a 15-year-old in a struggle over a handgun. Five people were killed in the district in close to a 24-hour period over the weekend. In Chicago, the homicide rate is down this year by almost 8 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Chicago Police Department, which credits, among others things, an active effort to keep handguns off the streets.
I'm only speculating here, but I'm willing to bet that the dozen police officers that flanked the democratic mayor of DC were his exempt political appointees.
This is the usual photo op that most liberal politicians use to garner support from the average citizen. A politician also will use a recent news story that involves a tragic shooting in order to prove the urgency of the existing gun ban or the introduction of stricter gun control measures. DC and Chicago have some of the strictest gun laws in the country but still are the most violent. Criminals do not abide by the law, Law abiding citizens do. This is an undisputed fact. Based on this fact you can confidently conclude that only criminals will have guns where law abiding citizens are denied them.
According to our own department the homicide rate is down 8% compared to a year ago and they credit that decline in "an active effort to keep handguns off the street".
Ok I'll stipulate to the fact that hard charging coppers are out there chasing criminals who illegally have obtained a handgun. These criminals are being apprehended as a result of ILCS and not MCC. City ordinances are not keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, only law abiding citizens.
