Overtime Initiative-Fair or Not?

A teletype recently placed in the CO Book got us thinking about this whole overtime initiative. The teletype informed Sgt.'s working the Dan Ryan Construction Project they would now be limited to eight days maximum a month, down from the previous maximum of twelve. An informal poll of Sgt.'s we know revealed very few are getting days in this program. A check of the assignment roster revealed that a small group of Sgt.'s have this program monopolized. Not bad work if you can get it (Do the math at time and a half). Why is this program bid differently than Tara, Midway, and CHA? Why can a Sgt. work the Dan Ryan and then go to work in his unit/district the same day? While we're at it, how is it that some guys in S/S DOG (hello HQ) are maxing out in the other programs while some Sgt.'s are unsuccessful bidders? Perhaps someone can help shed some light on this situation.

Starting to hear complaints about the overtime inititives. We have gotten a few dates so far on TARA but have been shut out by both Midway/OHare and Dan Ryan.
Hard to complain when making roughly $60 an hour.

I have about 500 sergeants below me in seniority. I have not received one day of Dan Ryan this month. I put in for ALL days that I can work. However, some sergeants with very high seniority received 12 and now will receive 8 days. Also - I NEVER get any CHA, once again I put in for EVERYDAY I can work.

MY beef, the system is not working right. I agree seniority counts for everything -however when you have 500 people below you in seniority and get nothing - and some very high senior people get 12 days - SOMETHING IS WRONG.

The 8 days for the Ryan should be cut down to 4 days. Also a total of 2 days for all other special employment details (4 days for P.O.s)

Sgt. D.K. (025 1st Watch) states he will be making over $200,000 this year from the CPD alone. If you really need to work this much you have a problem anyway.

The PBPA should suggest this to the Patrol Division however we would have to wake someone up if we tried to make a phone call.

Maybe you should quit your crying and be happy with whatever you get.
Remember, there are thousands of po's out there that would be happy just to get our pay, and not even worry about the overtime.
Stay safe out there.

I here that ! I have 5 years as a Sgt. and can't even get 1 day. One Sgt. I know gets 10 days a month she works 1st watch, what a joke. If we had a real union or whatever they would be on the horn by now. But we dont have one just another joke. Just like they droped the ball for all the Sgts working in housing south. Instead of going to arbitration for them regarding being excluded from the CHA overtime program they had a letter from the city promising to honor the bullshit they gave to the FOP. Is there any way I can just not be a member of the union? I do not want them to get another dime from me for a golf outing, corned beef dinner or anything since they do nothing for me. Is this possible ? anyone know? please post.

You are correct. There has to be a system that is fair. Spread the wealth. Everyone should have the same opportunity for some extra cash. How about opening it up to LT's also?

Seniority should rule. If you have 20 years as a Sgt and want to work every day, go for it, you deserve it. The problem with the current system is that it allows people to continually cancel their assignment with no punishment. What's happening is that the guyswith 20 years as Sgt's ar putting in for every day at all three venues on every watch. They see what they can get and THEN choose to go or not. There should be something about having to cancel for reasons other than IOD or Court that suspend people for more than one/two/three cancellations per month. I've put in for every day off (couldn't for furlough---that should be changed too) and have managed one day of CHA. That's it. But I only have 3.5 years and I understand that seniority should stand for something. Hopefully I can get some as I get more time in grade. What I want to know is what they do if someone calls in? Who do they assign? Do they assign anyone or do they just have the other Sgt's cover? If they do call for another Sgt, where do they get the list of names? Anyone that works these often should know what happens when other don't show or anyone with inside knowledge could shed some light on this. It would be appreciated.

I disagree that seniority should rule and get you everything. Seniority should allow you first opportunity.
What would be wrong with the way we pick furloughs? Most senior gets first pick, least senior last pick, and then to the next round and the process starts again.
Seniority should garner you a preference in choice but not facilitate gluttony.

You do not have to be a PBPA member. You can choose not to pay union dues and still would be covered by the coolective bargaining agreement. You could then become a full member in the FOP again, which allows you to be covered by their legal defense fund. A Sgt. I know has done exactly that.

Listen guys, seniority absolutlely counts for something, but the system currently in place is not fair. If our union was paying attention, they would have had some say in the way this system is administered. There is plenty of OT to go around. As soon as the city realizes how much money some Sgt.'s are making working OT, all of these programs will be terminated. How can you explain people making close to $200k a year?

I agree with the poster who said the overtime should be handled like furloughs. Let those with the most seniority get first choice and continue through the list until the dates are filled. The senior sergeants get their choices and also get more days than those beneath them. That is a fair system that rewards seniority.

For those of you that choose to whine about being sent to districts throughout the city instead of staying close to where you live, listen closely. The assignments are given based on appointment date. The most senior sgt. for that day regardless of his unit of assignment will work in 001. The spots are then filled until the least senior successful bidder is assigned to 025.

How do districts request TARA personnel? Every time I work TARA in a northside district, there have been four or five sergeants from that district working already plus me. I have even been put on the desk because there were no cars left to drive. But everyday I go to work in my southside district of assignment, we are lucky to have two or three sergeants and no TARA help to be found. Does this fall on the Commander or HQ? It doesn't make any sense.

Did we touch a nerve? I could be wrong, but you sure sound like one of the guys that's making a killing and are afraid the cat's out of the bag.

So this seniority thing is working out (fuck these inside coward yellow bellied cunts)
for those of use who soldier on w/o having clout. I/F forever!!!!

OFF TOPIC / From SCC:

Has anyone else heard that the sgt's taking the first part of the lt's test did not receive a copy of their answers as required by the new contract. maybe i'm a little paranoid but somehow i doubt that was an accident. my guess is that there must be some real stupid sgt's taking the test that someone downtown wants to give a meritorious spot. now, with a violation of the contract, the dept will be forced to pass everyone for the first half and everyone with a phone call becomes eligible...yet again, promoting incompetence, and in this case, extreme incompetence

...................................

Is this REALLY in the NEW Contract??? (That we don't have in our hands yet) If so, could we still file a griveance?

Anonymous said...

Good luck with that grievance! Tell your unit rep...oh yeah we don't have one. That's okay, contact the PBPA President at the office...oh yeah we don't have one. On second thought, just look it up in the contract...oh yeah, we never got a copy of that! Nevermind.

That comment was stated by the Nolan team years ago in arbitration in reference to opening more units and positions up for bid. Didn't like it then and like it even less now. What pigs were they referring to and who ended up being the Hogs.

Use to come down to desk personnel putting you in for CHA and Transit Special, that being the P.O. who was doing the sheets in the Mass Transit unit. Usually a few eye to eye worked back then. Isn't there still an insider somewhere?

Is this akin to inside secretaries, etc. getting Road Block and Saturation OT regularly, who were not high DUI writers or writers at all period. Never saw anyone pull over a veh. via desk.

"You should quit" .. I bet that's your answer for everything. You should run for union president. Another typical assh@le know-it-all copper. God I hate this job and these fuc%ing assh@les.

I'm counting the days left.

I'm in the top 250 in seniority and got only 1 day at ORD last month. This is the only gig I'll work, cause I'm not pushing cars in the ghetto, projects, or on the Ryan. Will you southsiders stay south please.

As for the union, the president knew he was getting made Lt. Why didnt he tell us? The position only pays a sergeants salary, with no O.T. period. You cab have the job..

Your right, how bout when we had real P.O.'s for dispatchers, not the crap they give us now.

Please keep in mind that this is an open blog
