NYPD

We received a comment from a reader who seemed to have a strong/insiders opinion about the process of selecting the new superintendent.

As a very high-ranking officer in a major out-of-state police agency, I find the CPD dilemma particularly disturbing. Well-informed police executives throughout the nation are aware of the fully politicized administration of the Chicago P.D.

It is common knowledge among IACP and PERF membership that any "nationwide search" for a successor to Philip Cline is at best, disingenuous, certainly under your current mayor.

Chief Cline's successor will be chosen from within the ranks of the Chicago P.D.

The selection board will be clandestinely directed to include your mayor's predetermined favorite among the finalists.

Your mayor will retain absolute control over the CPD through his selection.

Tragically, the essential prerequisite is that Mayor Daley's choice must be willing to blindly compromise any ethical principles and defer to Daley's every whim as his loyal puppet.

Heavy-handed, politically corrupt interference anathematizes the credibility, integrity and morale of a professional law enforcement agency.

Do not expect any eminently qualified out-of-town applicants.

And then we read in today's Sun-Times the feelings of Garry McCarthy, formerly of the NYPD, who was a finalist in the 1993 superintendent search.
"Having had a taste of Chicago politics, I'm not sure I would want to subject myself to that again," said McCarthy, 47.
"I was called after it was announced at a press conference. I thought it was kind of dirty pool after spending hours with Mayor Daley.

Go figure! Welcome to our world/blog Mr. McCarthy.

What would happen if the next superintendent did what he wanted and ran the department his way without consulting the mayor? Could the mayor fire him simply because he wanted to or would he have to show cause?

"The New York cop who was a surprise finalist for Chicago police superintendent in 2003 said Wednesday he will not apply for the job being vacated by Phil Cline because the last search was an inside job."

I agree with this , but not completely.
I got promoted to Sergeant off the list without having the answers, and without a merit selection.
Could I have gotten lucky with my answers? Sure I could have, I scored in the top 50. I did not take the recent LT'S test, so next time around if I do well on it , Ill conclude that my score was no Fluke, I'll let you know in about five years.

I probably got lucky

The truth be told, and it comes from outsiders with no clout or chance in hell of getting the spot!

Nationwide search is narrowed to who gives the best head among the current pool of command!

Although there are many moe qualified applicants, I believe that in the end, HUBERMAN will wind up in the Supe's seat.
We'll just have to see how this all goes....it will definitely be interesting, our first Supt. of Police riding a float at the Gay Pride Parade!

We let you vent and enough is enough! Your cynical rants typifies that of an underachiever. Despite the fact that the meritorious system is laughable there are indeed those who studied and did well enough to be promoted. You obviously didn't crack the top 5% of all test takers and therefore the test can't be legit. Get over yourself!

I made it legit and don't owe anyone. People shouldn't assume paying for a study group gets you a passing grade. My study group was made up of regular people and it was free. Most of us went on to become sgt.'s or detectives.

Your profiling skills are laughable.Don't worry, there will me more scandals to prove how corrupt this Dept./City really is,you sir are a protector of the lie.

That was hardly an attempt at profiling. I was just calling it as I see it. You can't do well enough on the test taking side so you condemn all those who have by insinuating the whole process is corrupt. Your logic is based on bullshit. You can't do well on a test so it must not be legit and those who did do well must also be corrupt. Its funny how you failed to quote me on my contempt for the meritorious process and then contend that I am part of the lie.
Like I said "get over yourself"
